Strike The Gold, a son of Alydar, was one of the top 3-year-olds of 1991. After finishing a close second to 1990 2-year-old champion Fly So Free in the Florida Derby, Strike the Gold defeated that rival convincingly in the Blue Grass Stakes to become a top Kentucky Derby contender. Strike The Gold continued his good form by unleashing his signature rally from far off the pace to win the Kentucky Derby by 1¾ lengths over Best Pal. After a dull 6th place finish in the Preakness, Strike The Gold returned to form in the Belmont Stakes with his powerful late rally only to lose by a head in a thrilling finish to Preakness winner Hansel, who would go on to become the Champion 3-year-old of 1991.
After the Belmont Stakes, Strike The Gold continued to race competitively against the best handicap horses in North America. However, he was only able to win three more times, the Pimlico Special and Nassau County Handicap in 1992, and an allowance race in 1993.
