Easy Goer

Easy Goer was one of the top racehorses of all time and arguably the best one ever sired by Alydar. In 1988, Easy Goer won the Cowdin and Champagne stakes before finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, winning the award as the 2-year-old Champion. In 1989, Easy Goer had one of the best seasons any thoroughbred can have without being crowned a champion in any category. In his career, Easy Goer won nine grade I stakes races, placed in four others, and never finished out of the money in any race. His worst finish was a third place in the 1990 Metropolitan Handicap where the winner was Horse of the Year Criminal Type and the place horse was Sprint Champion Housebuster.

Easy Goer's career was eerily similar to that of his sire Alydar. Proclaimed as a superhorse even before making his 2-year-old debut, Easy Goer performed as advertised on the racetrack. In his 3-year-old season, Easy Goer dominated in eight of the eleven races in which he ran, nine of which were grade I stakes races. He would have won them all except for the presence of Sunday Silence, who became for Easy Goer in 1989 the equivalent of Affirmed for Alydar in 1978. Sunday Silence narrowly defeated Easy Goer in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Breeders' Cup Classic to claim the 1989 3-year-old Champion and Horse of the Year awards. As a 4-year-old in 1990, Easy Goer succumbed to injury and retirement after only two more victories, disappointing many fans who had looked forward to another year of the Easy Goer/Sunday Silence rivalry, in the same way that many fans were hoping for more Alydar/Affirmed races in 1979 when Alydar was retired due to injury. Easy Goer and Alydar both ended their careers with 14 victories, and each ran their final race on July 4th in the Suburban Handicap at Belmont.

Easy Goer was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1997.
