Fun Facts

• Alydar and Affirmed had a rivalry unlike any other. In nine of their ten meetings on the racetrack, Alydar and Affirmed were the first two horses across the finish line.
• In 1978, the only horse to finish in front of Alydar the entire year was Affirmed.
• In Affirmed's first 18 career races, which includes all ten encounters with Alydar, the only horse to finish in front of Affirmed on the racetrack was Alydar.
• If the distances and margins for all ten races between Alydar and Affirmed were combined into one, the pair raced together for a total of 10 5/16 miles, with Affirmed outrunning Alydar by a little over 4½ lengths. If one were to make an adjustment for the ground and momentum lost by Alydar in the Travers due to the flagrant interferance from Affirmed, that margin could have been next to nothing.
• In Thoroughbred Champions by The staff of the Blood-Horse Magazine, Alydar was ranked as the 27th best racehorse of the 20th century. Affirmed was ranked 12th.
• Alydar was born on 3/23/1975 at Calumet Farm, raced his entire career under the colors of Calumet Farm, then stood as a stallion at Calumet Farm until his death on 11/15/1990. Alydar is buried at the Calumet Cemetery.
• Alydar was trained by stable trainer John M. Veitch for his entire racing career.
• Alydar was ridden by three different jockeys. Eddie Maple rode Alydar for the first seven races of his career. Jorge Velasquez took over as the jockey for Alydar in the 1977 Champagne Stakes in which Alydar beat Affirmed by 1¼ lengths, and was Alydar's jockey in 16 of his remaining 19 races, including all of his most famous battles with Affirmed in 1978. Jeffrey Fell was Alydar's jockey for the remaining three races: the 1978 Arlington Classic, and the final two races of Alydar's career as a 4 year old in 1979.
• Alydar was the betting favorite in 20 of his 26 races. He was the second choice in the betting to Affirmed in 5 of the 6 races in which he was not favored. The highest odds ever for Alydar was 2.1 to 1, in a maiden race in his second career start.
• Alydar wore blinkers in a race for the first time in his fifth career race in the Sapling at Monmouth, and wore blinkers for every race through the 1978 Preakness. The blinkers were removed prior to the historic 1978 Belmont Stakes when trainer John Veitch was willing to try anything and everything to try to turn the table on Affirmed. Although Alydar did not win the Belmont Stakes, he ran so well that he raced the rest of his career without blinkers.
