Affirmed raced down the back stretch and towards the far turn on the outside of Shake Shake Shake, who was running in the middle of the race track. Alydar made his move on the rail poised to slip through on the inside and into the lead. At that moment, Affirmed bore in, forcing Alydar to check sharply and lose stride. After swinging to the outside, Alydar was able to resume his run down the stretch, but this incident had allowed Affirmed to draw away. Affirmed passed the wire with a comfortable 1 3/4 length margin over Alydar. After a stewards inquiry, Affirmed was disqualified with Alydar declared the winner.
